FORT McMURRAY — A fire that broke out at Sunset Salvage on Friday evening kept firefighters working through the night and well into Saturday, with Regional Emergency Services saying crews spent nearly 21 hours at the scene.
The fire was first reported shortly after 6 p.m. Friday, when Fort McMurray firefighters responded to heavy black smoke coming from the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo landfill site.
Crews arrived to find a significant fire burning within a large pile of scrap metal at the Sunset Recycling site.
Additional resources were requested as firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control.
Pumpers and tankers from the Anzac and Saprae Creek fire departments joined the response, while Suncor and Syncrude provided firefighting crews and resources through mutual aid agreements.
Firefighters worked in shifts throughout Friday night and into Saturday. Eighteen hours after the initial call, crews were still dousing hot spots deep within the scrap metal pile.
The final fire units left the site shortly before 3 p.m. Saturday.
Regional Fire Chief Jody Butz credited co-operation between municipal and industry firefighters with helping bring the stubborn fire under control.
“This was an important reminder of how our regional model and partnerships are important strengths,” Butz said. “By working together, we help keep communities safe.”
No injuries were reported and no structures were damaged.
Sunset Recycling is temporarily closed following the fire, but regular operations at the municipal landfill were not affected.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined.
