ATHABASCA, Alta. — Alberta RCMP Major Crimes is investigating the death of a 12-year-old Edmonton boy whose remains were found near Athabasca last week.
Athabasca RCMP responded to a report of human remains at about 3:30 a.m. Thursday.
An autopsy was conducted Friday at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Edmonton, where the death was determined to be a homicide.
Police identified the victim as 12-year-old Fiasal Hussein of Edmonton.
The RCMP Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation.
Police are now asking anyone who was travelling in the area of Highway 813 near Calling Lake or Range Road 213A, also known as the C-Road, between midnight and 4:30 a.m. Thursday to come forward.
Investigators are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who may have dashcam video from the area during those hours.
Athabasca is about 300 kilometres south of Fort McMurray by road.
Police have not released further information about the circumstances surrounding Hussein’s death or how his remains came to be in the Athabasca area.
