FORT McMURRAY — Wildfire danger has eased to moderate across the Fort McMurray Forest Area as the region reaches the middle of the week with no active wildfires.
Alberta Wildfire says fires can still start and spread under cooler conditions, but they are less likely to become severe if detected quickly.
Residents are being urged to remain cautious when using outdoor fires and ensure they are fully extinguished.
There have been 45 wildfires in the Fort McMurray Forest Area since Jan. 1, but none are currently active.
Alberta Wildfire is also reminding people using off-highway vehicles to take precautions to prevent accidentally starting a fire.
Grass, mud and other debris can accumulate around hot areas of an OHV and should be removed frequently. Riders are also encouraged to carry a shovel, pail and fire extinguisher.
Vehicles should not be parked in tall grass because heat from exhaust systems can ignite dry vegetation. Bare ground or gravel should be used whenever possible.
Meanwhile, residents have until Saturday to enter Alberta Wildfire’s annual wildfire pledge contest.
People who take the pledge commit to measures aimed at preventing human-caused wildfires and are entered for a chance to win an educational helicopter flight over the Horse River wildfire area.
The deadline to participate is Aug. 15, with one entry permitted per person.
