EDMONTON — Alberta says a group representing oil and gas producers responsible for more than 40 per cent of Canada’s oil production expects many of its members would commit volumes to a proposed west coast pipeline.
Energy and Minerals Minister Brian Jean says the Explorers and Producers Association of Canada sent a letter to the federal government outlining its support for the project and anticipated commitments from its members.
The Alberta government says the proposed pipeline would carry up to one million barrels of crude oil per day along a roughly 1,250-kilometre route from Bruderheim, Alta., to a deepwater port south of Vancouver.
Jean says the anticipated commitments demonstrate industry support for the proposal.
“Every barrel that moves through this pipeline supports jobs on rigs, in the field and in the communities that depend on this industry, from Fort McMurray to the Peace region and right across the province,” Jean said.
The province has submitted the pipeline proposal to the federal Major Projects Office and says a notice has been published in the Canada Gazette beginning the process of potentially listing the pipeline as a project of national interest.
Alberta has set a goal of doubling provincial oil production to eight million barrels per day by 2035.
Jean says the province will continue working with the federal government, private sector and Indigenous partners in an effort to advance the project.
