FORT McMURRAY — A 17-year-old Fort McMurray boy is facing several weapons charges after police responded to a firearms complaint at a Timberlea restaurant early Friday morning.
Wood Buffalo RCMP say officers were called to the McDonald’s at Stoneycreek Village at about 2:16 a.m. following a report of a male pointing a firearm inside the restaurant.
Police allege the male was involved in a verbal dispute with another patron before pointing the weapon.
The suspect left in a black SUV before officers arrived.
RCMP obtained surveillance footage along with a description of the suspect and the SUV’s licence plate.
Police located the vehicle travelling south on Highway 63 a short time later and conducted a traffic stop. RCMP say all occupants, who were identified as youths, were arrested without incident.
A firearm was later located and seized. Police determined it was a replica.
The 17-year-old is charged with assault with a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and using an imitation firearm in the commission of an offence.
His name cannot be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
He was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on Oct. 6.
RCMP say firearms complaints are treated as a top public safety priority and officers responding to such calls must assume a reported weapon is real.
Police say imitation and replica handguns can be difficult to distinguish from real firearms and can carry serious public safety and legal consequences.
