Scientists may have just found the strangest way yet to deal with plastic waste: turn it into cookies.
Researchers at Southern Illinois University have developed a process that breaks down PET plastic — the stuff used in many water and soda bottles — along with agricultural waste. Special microbes and yeast can then transform those materials into nutrients like proteins and fats.
The project is partly supported by NASA, which is interested in finding new ways to make nutritious food for astronauts on long missions. Researchers say the technology could potentially help with food shortages while also reducing plastic waste.
The cookies have passed initial safety testing, but they haven’t officially been taste-tested yet.
