FORT McMURRAY – Twenty-five years after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and Regional Emergency Services will host their annual Fallen Firefighter Memorial.
The public ceremony will be held Sept. 11 at Fire Hall 5, located at 200 Saprae Creek Trail on Airport Road.
On Sept. 11, 2001, 19 al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial aircraft. Two were flown into the World Trade Center towers in New York City, a third struck the Pentagon and the fourth crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers and crew members fought back. Nearly 3,000 people were killed, according to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
The victims included 343 members of the New York City Fire Department who died while responding to the World Trade Center, according to the FDNY.
Members of the Fort McMurray Honour Guard and Fort McMurray Fire Department will pay tribute to firefighters who have died in the line of duty.
The ceremony will commemorate their courage, dedication and service while recognizing firefighters who continue to serve the community.
Seating will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the ceremony at 10:30 a.m.
Light refreshments will be available after the service.
