FORT McMURRAY — Donations are pouring in following the recent discovery of 97 dogs at a home in Gregoire.
Residents and businesses have been rallying around the Fort McMurray SPCA since Bylaw Services removed the small-breed dogs on Aug. 25.
Some businesses are offering discounts on toys and treats purchased for donation, while others are directing proceeds from sales to the shelter.
The seizure of the large number of animals has also made national news.
The SPCA says its animal population doubled overnight while staffing remained unchanged. It is asking the public for patience as employees and volunteers work to care for the new arrivals.
Each dog will require a veterinary examination, vaccinations and spaying or neutering. Some are also expected to need specialized treatment and food.
The process could take weeks or months, and the shelter is not accepting adoption applications for the dogs at this time.
The SPCA is primarily seeking monetary donations to help cover the cost of caring for the animals.
Donations can be made through the Fort McMurray SPCA website.
The shelter also offers monthly donation plans, memberships, kennel sponsorships and a giving catalogue allowing donors to support specific procedures or programs.
Other options include supporting the Isabella Paws Fund for rescued animals needing life-saving medical care, donating rewards points, using workplace matching programs or donating a vehicle.
People can also purchase supplies through the SPCA’s Amazon wishlist or participating local pet stores.
The shelter is seeking foster caregivers to provide temporary homes for animals awaiting adoption. Foster applications are available at fmspca.ca.
The SPCA is also asking residents to share its official social-media posts to help find foster homes and ensure accurate information is circulated.

All 97 dogs remain in the SPCA’s care while the Bylaw Services investigation continues. Charges are pending against the person who was at the home when the dogs were found.
