FORT MCMURRAY — A 48-year-old Fort McMurray man is facing four criminal harassment charges after police responded to reports of a suspicious person approaching female youth at MacDonald Island Park.
Wood Buffalo RCMP say officers were called to the facility at 1 C.A. Knight Way at about 3:25 p.m. Sept. 4 after receiving a 911 call.
Police were told a man had been approaching and bothering female youth near the running track.
Officers located and arrested a suspect without incident following an initial investigation.
The man’s name is being withheld in anticipation of a publication ban.
He was held for a judicial interim release hearing and has since been released from police custody on conditions. He is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on Sept. 16.
The allegations have not been proven in court.
RCMP say the investigation is continuing and information from members of the public, along with timely reporting, helped investigators identify the suspect early in the investigation.
Police are reminding residents to report suspicious people or activity, but not to put themselves at risk by confronting anyone. Anyone facing an immediate threat to public safety should call 911.
