FORT MCMURRAY — Wood Buffalo residents can dispose of household hazardous waste and electronics for free during a one-day collection event Saturday.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is holding its annual Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Roundup Sept. 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Centerfire Place parking lot at 110 Eymundson Rd.
The event is intended for materials that should not be placed in regular garbage or recycling bins.
Accepted items include oil- and water-based paint, engine oil, gasoline, diesel, household chemicals, weed killer and bear spray.
Residents can also drop off propane tanks weighing between one and 20 pounds, fire extinguishers, helium and spray foam cylinders and several types of fluorescent bulbs.
Electronics including televisions, computers, vacuums, tools, toys, lamps and solar panels will also be accepted, along with batteries of all sizes, including vehicle batteries.
The municipality says hazardous materials can pose risks when improperly discarded. Cylinders and batteries can leak or rupture under pressure, while chemicals can create hazards for landfill workers or contaminate soil and water.
Electronics require proper disposal to allow materials to be recovered and reduce the risk of contamination.
Residents unable to attend Saturday’s event can drop off household hazardous and electronic waste throughout the year at the Regional Landfill’s public drop-off.
The roundup is sponsored by the Alberta Recycling Management Authority.
