FORT MCMURRAY — A 16-year-old Fort McMurray boy is facing charges after Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to a stolen vehicle early Sunday morning.
Police say officers were called at about 2:11 a.m. Sept. 13 after a 2008 black Buick Allure was reported stolen from Comeau Crescent in Timberlea.
RCMP say the vehicle was located a short time later travelling north on Highway 63, north of the Parsons Creek exit.
Police attempted a traffic stop, but say the driver fled at a high rate of speed.
RCMP say officers did not pursue the vehicle because of public safety concerns.
Police continued patrols and later returned to Comeau Crescent, where they found the Buick parked back in the owner’s driveway.
A male youth was located walking nearby and detained.
RCMP say officers found several stolen items in his possession, including the keys to the Buick.
The 16-year-old is charged with theft of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime and flight from a peace officer.
He cannot be identified under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
The youth was released from police custody on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on Oct. 20.
RCMP are encouraging residents to report criminal or suspicious activity to police and to call 911 if a crime is in progress.
