FORT MCMURRAY — Keyano College is highlighting its role in workforce development and regional training following a visit from Alberta’s minister and deputy minister of Advanced Education.
Minister Myles McDougall and Deputy Minister Shannon Marchand met Monday with members of Keyano’s Board of Governors and senior leadership to discuss post-secondary education, workforce needs and opportunities in the Wood Buffalo region.
Keyano says the visit gave college leaders an opportunity to outline institutional priorities and discuss how the school prepares students for careers while working with industry and community partners.
“This visit showcased the people, programs and partnerships that make Keyano an important part of the Wood Buffalo region,” said Keyano president and CEO Scott MacPherson.
“Keyano is deeply connected to this region, and we want to continue working with government, industry and our partners to expand opportunities for the people who live and work here.”
Provincial representatives toured several areas of the college and viewed training technology, including ambulance, welding and heavy-equipment simulators.
The visit also included the Wood Buffalo Regional Innovation Network, where discussions focused on strengthening connections among Keyano, industry, entrepreneurs and the broader community.
At the Bouchier Indigenous Student Centre, the delegation learned about the new space and Keyano’s efforts to support Indigenous students through culture, connection and learning.
McDougall also met with representatives from the Students’ Association to discuss student priorities and the post-secondary experience.
Provincial representatives also met members of the Keyano community, including student-athletes training at the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre.
Keyano says the visit helped reinforce its relationship with the provincial government while highlighting the need for northern Alberta’s strengths and priorities to be reflected in broader discussions about the future of post-secondary education.
The college offers certificates, diplomas, trades qualifications and degrees in areas including energy, construction, business, health, arts, sciences and education.
