FORT MCMURRAY — The deadline for applying to serve on a Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo board or committee is fast approaching.
More than 60 vacancies are available across 17 council-appointed boards and committees, with applications closing Oct. 18.
The municipality is looking for residents with a range of skills, perspectives and experience to help shape local decisions.
Openings include positions on the Advisory Committee on Aging, Assessment Review Board, Combative Sports Commission, Community Identification Committee and Community Standards Appeal Committee.
Other groups recruiting members include the Fort McMurray Airport Authority, Homelessness Initiatives Strategic Committee, Municipal Policing Advisory Committee, Regional Advisory Committee on Inclusion, Diversity and Equity, and Regional Recreation Corporation Board.
Vacancies are also available on the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board, Wood Buffalo Business and Development Advisory Committee, Wood Buffalo Economic Development Corporation, Wood Buffalo Housing and Development Corporation, Wood Buffalo Public Art and Beautification Committee, Wood Buffalo Regional Library Board and Wood Buffalo Revitalization Advisory Committee.
The municipality says serving on a board or committee can provide professional development and networking opportunities while giving residents a chance to work with community leaders on local issues.
Rural and Indigenous residents are being encouraged to apply. Most meetings can be attended remotely by video call, making it easier for people outside Fort McMurray to participate.
Residents can apply for positions on more than one board or committee.
Anyone not appointed by council may be added to a pool of applicants for future vacancies in 2027.
