FORT MCMURRAY — The wildfire danger has fallen to low across the Fort McMurray Forest Area following recent rainfall and cooler temperatures, with no active wildfires currently burning in the region.
Alberta Wildfire says 56 wildfires have been recorded in the Fort McMurray Forest Area since Jan. 1.
While only 10 days remain in Alberta’s official wildfire season, which runs from March 1 through Oct. 31, wildfires can start at any time of year. Officials are urging residents to continue using caution outdoors, particularly where dry vegetation remains.
Even in cooler weather, dry grass and other vegetation can ignite and allow a wildfire to spread quickly.
Alberta Wildfire is also using the final days of the season to look ahead to 2027, with a wildland firefighter recruitment open house scheduled for Wednesday in Fort McMurray.
The open house will run from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Fort McMurray Provincial Building at 9915 Franklin Ave.
Wildfire staff will be available to answer questions about becoming a wildland firefighter, while visitors will also have an opportunity to see and test some of the equipment used on the fireline.
A second recruitment open house is planned for Dec. 8 for seasonal support positions available during the 2027 wildfire season.
Alberta Wildfire is also reminding people using off-highway vehicles to regularly clear grass, mud and other debris from hot areas of their machines. Drivers are encouraged to carry firefighting equipment such as a shovel, pail and fire extinguisher, and avoid parking in tall grass where heat from an exhaust system could ignite vegetation.
Fire permits remain mandatory for burning within the Forest Protection Area until the end of wildfire season on Oct. 31, with the exception of campfires.
Permits are free and can be requested online. Anyone burning under a permit is required to extinguish their fire if winds exceed the conditions allowed under the permit.
