CALGARY — ConocoPhillips is cutting jobs in Canada for the second year in a row, with employees and contractors in Calgary and at its Surmont and Montney operations affected by the latest workforce reduction.
The Houston-based oil and gas producer has not disclosed how many jobs are being eliminated or how the reductions are divided among its Canadian operations.
The company says it regularly reviews its workforce to ensure its operations remain aligned with its long-term strategy, operate efficiently and are positioned for future opportunities.
Employees at the company’s Calgary office were instructed to work from home Tuesday and were scheduled to be notified virtually if their positions were affected, according to an internal notice obtained by CTV News.
Workers at the Surmont oil sands operation in northeastern Alberta and the company’s Montney operations were scheduled to receive notifications by phone.
ConocoPhillips’ 2025 annual report listed about eight per cent of its workforce in Canada, representing roughly 792 employees out of a global workforce of about 9,900.
The latest cuts follow layoffs in Canada in late 2025 as part of a broader company restructuring.
ConocoPhillips announced last year it planned to reduce its global workforce by 20 to 25 per cent as it moved to streamline operations and reduce costs following its acquisition of Marathon Oil.
Company figures cited in the reports show its global employee count fell from about 11,800 at the end of 2024 to 9,900 at the end of 2025, a decline of roughly 16 per cent.
ConocoPhillips previously said it expected the broader reorganization to be completed in 2026.
The company has not provided site-specific workforce figures for the latest round of cuts, leaving it unclear whether Alberta’s group termination requirements apply.
