FORT MCMURRAY — Three people are facing charges after RCMP say a firearm was involved in a break and enter at a home on Chipewyan Prairie First Nation south of Fort McMurray.
Wood Buffalo RCMP say officers were called to the residence around 10:41 p.m. Monday after receiving a report that three people had entered the home and were armed with a firearm.
Police say the three were known to the victim and allegedly demanded a gift card before taking the victim’s laptop and leaving in a red Mitsubishi Lancer.
Officers located the vehicle shortly afterward on the access road to Chipewyan Prairie First Nation and attempted a traffic stop, but RCMP say the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed.
Police did not pursue the vehicle due to public safety concerns.
RCMP located the Mitsubishi again around 12:20 a.m. Tuesday as it travelled south on Highway 881.
Police say officers successfully stopped the vehicle and arrested all of its occupants without incident.
A search of the vehicle turned up a sawed-off shotgun, three replica firearms, bear spray, a knife and a baton, along with the stolen laptop, according to RCMP.
A 17-year-old from Chipewyan Prairie First Nation is charged with break and enter, using a firearm in the commission of an offence, several firearms offences, dangerous operation of a conveyance, flight from police and three counts of failing to comply with an order under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
A 15-year-old from Chipewyan Prairie First Nation is charged with break and enter, assault, using a firearm in the commission of an offence and several firearms offences.
Neither youth can be identified under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Police also charged 27-year-old Beaver Lake resident Cody Benoit-Cardinal with break and enter, using a firearm in the commission of an offence and several firearms offences.
All three were held in custody following judicial interim release hearings and are scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray Wednesday.
“The timely response by officers and subsequent arrest demonstrate our ongoing commitment to public safety and to keeping our communities safe,” Insp. Troy Switzer said.
Switzer encouraged residents to report crimes and suspicious activity to police.
These allegations have not been proven in court.
